The short version
Go is a cheaper way to get more of what Free already gives you: more messages, more uploads, more images, longer memory. Plus is a different tier altogether. It unlocks the newest GPT-6 models, removes ads and adds the heavier tools: deep research, projects, scheduled tasks and Codex.
So the real question isn't "is $12 worth it?" It's "do I need any of the things only Plus has?"
What you get with Go ($8)
- Higher limits than Free on messages, tools, file uploads and image creation
- Longer memory, so ChatGPT remembers more about you between chats
- The Luna models, which are fast and good at everyday tasks
- Clearly labeled ads, kept separate from answers
What Plus adds ($20)
- GPT-6 models including reasoning. Noticeably better at multi-step problems, analysis, math and code.
- No ads.
- Deep research that browses many sources and writes a cited report.
- Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs for organizing ongoing work.
- Codex and ChatGPT Work for coding and longer agent-style tasks.
Who should pick Go
Students, writers, people who use ChatGPT for translation, emails and quick questions, and anyone whose main frustration with Free is running out of messages. If you've never wished ChatGPT were "smarter", only that it let you keep going, Go is the right fit.
Who should pick Plus
Anyone who uses ChatGPT for work most days, asks it to reason through problems, writes or reviews code, or wants research reports with sources. Also anyone who simply finds ads in a work tool distracting.
A simple way to decide
Start with Go for a month. Each time you wish ChatGPT had done a better job on a hard question, or wanted deep research or coding help, make a note. Three or more notes in a month means Plus will pay for itself. Fewer than that, stay on Go and keep the $144 a year.
